"Enemy of Existence" breaks new ground in the science-fiction universe as readers actively participate in unraveling the plot
By Chanticleer Book Reviews on October 16, 2015
Format: Kindle Edition

Brimming with a fully dynamic set of characters and otherworldly energies, "Enemy of Existence" is the strong and inventive debut novel that introduces Juan Yur’s science-fiction space opera series Citadel 7.

Uniss and Dogg turn literary style on its head by greeting and then involving the reader in their story. Coming to Earth from the Superverse, they home in on 1960s outback Australia to seek out and commandeer the help of young Ben Blochentackle.

Uniss and Dogg engage and prepare Ben for the realities of the Superverse until he is able to digest the psychological and physical demands of the looming war. At the same time, Uniss and Dogg must find a way to satisfy the coercing unit of the Evercycle council, who are the creators of existence.

Ben’s human life changes forever when he joins Uniss and Dogg, right when he’s about to disclose his feelings towards his lady friend. Dogg’s painful timing in bringing Ben out to the Superverse is made worse when both Uniss and Dogg come to realize that Ben might not be who they thought he was. The reader finishes "Enemy of Existence" deeply satisfied but simultaneously left with many questions about what the future holds for the characters.

Yuan Jur utilizes his skillful craft of writing as he uses different perspectives throughout the book to open up various characters and their environments to the reader’s viewpoint. This particular development in Yuan Jur’s writing provides the reader with a well-rounded insight into the Superverse. The author is no stranger to breaking conventional norms with his quirky, unique writing style that will captivate readers.

"Enemy of Existence" breaks new ground in the science-fiction universe as readers are required to actively participate in unraveling the novel’s plot.

A welcome addition to science fiction, fantasy, and everything in between.

Verified Purchase What a wonderful book. Great, relatable characters, a superb plot, and a glimpse of a gigantic project to come. I'm looking forward to the rest of Citadel 7! Three great things:

1: So much science fiction and fantasy that involves the contemporary world centers on Americana, and American experiences. To have Australiana and Australian experiences reflected in both the settings and writing is a great addition to the literature. And not just for Aussies—I'm sure everyone will get a chuckle out of Australian vernacular and phrasing, and enjoy being immersed in another culture.

2: Blending science fiction and fantasy is tough, but Yuan Jur does it effortlessly. The pinnacle of this, I think, is how different species view technology. What counts as primitive, high-tech, and straight-up magic varies from a character's perspective, and this both highlights A.C. Clarke's aphorism: "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic;" and a central theme of the Citadel 7 universe, which is that reality is very much a point of view.

3: The Scarzen are hands down the best scifi or fantasy species developed in recent memory, and Jur writes action like no-one else. Much like the early part of any great saga, this book takes some work to begin—I'd say about 30% into the book it shifts gears and you are plunged (literally, from the central character's point of view) into the action. Work with it; think of it as the start of a roller coaster, pulling you up so it can drop you down.

A Multiversal Wild Ride

Bonnie Milanion July 1, 2016

Format: Kindle Edition

'Enemy of Existence' is without a doubt the single most imaginatively constructed sci-fi story I have ever encountered. It's a wild Aussie ride that encompasses vastly more than our single universe. Be prepared; it is not easy to get into. However, stick with it and the story will reward you with one of the wildest rides in the genre.

An amazing book that takes the reader in a journey through ...

An amazing book that takes the reader in a journey through different dimensions and parallel realities. Doors open and close taking you into different worlds before you even notice it. The story has an amazing zen cadence; some things happen really quickly while for some other moments, you feel suspended in time. It is hard to find the words to say how wonderful this book is. Original, credible, fantastic. A must read, I look forward to the next ones.

I'm not typically a science fiction reader, but, I loved it in the end

I'm not typically a science fiction reader, but I've got to say that Enemy of Existence blew me away. It's unique from the very beginning in the sense that the reader becomes a character themselves, and that left me no choice but to be drawn into the story. Yuan Jur builds the world of the Superverse without slowing the reader down--an almost impossible feat at the beginning of a large series but he finds a way to do it. Very well done.

Verified Purchase I really enjoyed this book, and can't wait for the next one. This is solid, big battle fantasy with vivid, unique characters and races. The only shortcoming was the somewhat slow introduction, but I guess that helps set up the massive scale of the series. It is going to be epic.

Verified Purchase I'm not a sci-fi reader however, I loved Enemy of Existence. I was hooked in the first sentence and my natural curiosity wanted to keep reading. I enjoyed the developing characters, their interactions with each other and the superverse and the many twists and turns of the story. The depth of the story, as well as the varied sub stories hidden in the book, meant there was never a dull moment. Nothing should be taken at face value. There is so much to explore in the text and the imagination. I loved it so much I've bought copies for family and friends.
